What is SEO and why is it so important? Get a basic overview.

The success of a website does not depend only on attractive design and solid code. But what exactly is SEO and how can you use it to maximize the visibility of your website?

When we talk about web design and development, we often focus on the technical aspects - programming, responsive design, site architecture and so on. But what if I told you that even the most beautiful and technically perfect website is practically worthless if people can't find it? This is where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes into play.

SEO is not just about keywords. It is a complex discipline that includes many factors:

Key Factors of SEO

1.      Technical SEO: Refers to the architecture and code of your website. It is essential for search engines to easily crawl and index your website content. Proper technical optimization also includes page load speed, mobile optimization and website security.

2.      On-page SEO: It applies to everything that is directly on your website. This includes keywords, meta data, content quality, internal linking and image optimization. The domain name also plays its role here, or rather the entire URL address, which should be relevant to the content. It is also important to have structured headings (H1, H2, H3) and ensure that the content is relevant and valuable to the reader.

3.      Off-page SEO: It refers to all activities outside of your website that can affect its position in search engines. Backlinks are a key element here, but social signals (sharing the page on social networks), online reviews and local SEO also play an important role.

How deep to dive into SEO?

1.      Web structure and UX design: Sites with a clear structure and intuitive user design not only attract more visitors, but also search engines. Search engines prefer sites that offer a quality and simple user experience. (UX = User Experience)

2.      Quality content: The best way to engage visitors is to provide valuable content. In short, something that will bring them a certain value. Regularly updating and adding new content can have a positive impact on your SEO. These can be articles on topics related to your industry, but also, for example, video or photo content.

3.      Backlinks: These are essential for off-page SEO. Quality backlinks from trusted sources increase the credibility of your site in search engines. I write more about backlinks below in this article.

4.      Local SEO: If you provide services in a specific area, it's important to focus on local SEO. This includes optimizing for local keywords, registering for Google Maps, Firmy.cz, or Zboží.cz, and collecting reviews.

5.      Mobile optimization: Nowadays, it's essential to have a mobile-optimized website. Google prefers mobile versions of websites to desktop ones.

6.      Social networks: Although not a direct ranking factor, active social media profiles can positively impact your SEO by increasing the visibility of your content.

SEO in practice: Step by step

1.      Audits and analyses: Audit your website to identify areas for improvement. Tools like Collabim or Ahrefs can help. If you do not want to pay for these tools, you can contact a professional who pays for them and can perform such analysis for you regularly for a fraction of the cost. I mainly use Collabim.

2.      Keyword research: Use tools such as Google Keyword Planner or Sklik to identify keywords relevant to your content. Search for relevant words for your business and evaluate the search and degree of competition.

3.      Optimize your content: Make sure your keywords are properly integrated into your headlines, subtitles, and body of text. Search engines are not satisfied if the keyword  is in the title - they also want to know that the topic is addressed in the text below it.

4.      Create new content: Blogs, articles, eBooks, and videos are a great way to attract visitors and get backlinks.

5.      Monitor your progress: Regularly check your search engine ranking and make adjustments. The Collabim tool, which I use, is also useful  here, so I can do the monitoring for you. If you write me, I will be happy to discuss it with you.

Getting backlinks

Backlinks are considered "voices of trust" for your site and can significantly contribute to its authority in search engines. But how can you get quality backlinks? Here are some proven strategies:

  1. Create quality content: If you're creating valuable content, people will want to refer to it naturally. Whether it's guides, infographics, research, or in-depth articles, provide readers with something unique and valuable.

  2. Guest blogging: Guest posts on popular websites not only increase your visibility, but can also bring you quality backlinks. Of course, it's important to choose sites that are relevant to your industry.

  3. Get reviews and ratings: If you provide services or products, you can ask your clients to review their website with a link to your website.

  4. Links from partners: If you work with other businesses or entrepreneurs, consider linking to each other's sites.

  5. Active participation in online communities: An active presence in forums, discussion groups, and social media can help you build relationships with people in the industry and build backlinks over time.

  6. Check your competitors: Use tools like Ahrefs to analyze your competitors' backlink profiles. You can see where they get their links from and try to get similar ones for your site.

  7. Outreach: If you come across an article or post that is relevant to your content, you can write to the author and suggest that they include your Page as an additional source of information.

In conclusion, it is important to remember that SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. With quality SEO, you can achieve not only more website traffic, but also better quality traffic (to your target audience), which ultimately increases your chances of online success.
